“I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.” - Marlene Dietrich, German-American actress/singer (1901-1992)
There are quotes that may have encouraged us, shaped our beliefs in life and work, and even given us strength and motivation in tough times. These are some valuable words of wisdom we’ve carried with us through the years – and we’d like to share them with you here. We hope that these quotes will do the same for you, no matter where you are, or what you’re going through in life.
"Despite its thorns, every flower embraces them delicately, and is still able to bloom elegantly." – Syahidah R.
This is something my best friend, Syahidah, said to encourage me – I may have my own thorns, but I can still overcome them and bloom in life. I live by this saying because no matter whom I meet along the way, I should always accept them for who they are, thorns and all. – Yuni, UI/UX intern
Our favourite little green friend says a lot in just eight words. Working in an agency means we're always fighting the fires that pop up left, right and center, and it certainly pays to put them away the first time round. No half-hearted attempts; you either do it or you don’t. (Plus, considering that a 900-year-old said this… that has to be some good advice right there!) – Harris, Content Strategist
"I'm an adult delinquent, to the end."
I really like this quote because it inspires me to think like a rebel. Not in a condescending manner or a way that brings harm to anyone, of course, but it’s more of the idea of striving to be non-conformist and always questioning the status quo. Mainstream isn’t a bad thing; it's just not letting the masses cannibalize your ideas. On top of that, Comme des Garçons is one of my favourite fashion labels.
– Elizabeth, Brand Strategist
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror.”
In my eyes, Michael Jackson will forever be one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived, no matter what people may say. ‘Man In The Mirror’ instantly became one of my favourite songs as a child, and it has been an earworm that has never left. It may sound cheesy, but this song keeps me positive about making the world a better place, and reminds me that we all share the responsibility to do so. Because,(altogether now) - ‘if you wanna make the world a better place / take a look at yourself and make that change'! - Rachel, Digital Strategist
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." – African proverb
I hold on to this quote because this has been ingrained in me since my secondary school days, when my principal explained its meaning and showed us examples. It always reminds me to continue pursuing what I want to do, and to always keep learning. It’s also important to be a part of a team - that is how I started becoming more proactive in school activities and events!
– Arissa, UI/UX intern
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
– Aristotle, Greek philosopher (384-322 BC)
Hearing different perspectives about the same subject is enriching. It’s a great reminder – and often times humbling – that the opinions of others usually are valid in their schema of things. It makes me more open to working with differing perspectives, and I often enjoy the challenge of amalgamating different viewpoints to derive a mutually agreeable solution. This also extends to my personal life; I often find great satisfaction in helping others understand the views of an opposing party during a conflict. – Debby, Junior Copywriter
“It’s like a man riding a lion. People think, ‘This guy’s brave.’ And he’s thinking, ‘How the hell did I get on a lion, and how do I keep from getting eaten?” - Toby Thomas, CEO/Founder of EnSite Solutions
Here at AKÏN, we like to challenge the status quo and enable others to act. On the other hand, this quote keeps me grounded: it’s a reminder for me to be humble, and to garner the daily motivation to aptly lead, coach and train my team. It also prompts me to constantly sharpen and acquire skills to keep up with the pace, in order to prevent myself from ‘getting eaten’. After all, along with my team of dedicated talents, it’s not about working hard just to keep myself abreast – I’m effectively leading a team (into the wilderness) on a pack of lions.
– Arvin, Business Development
“Last year’s success is today’s expectations.” – Cristiano Ronaldo, professional footballer
At AKÏN, we have a daily practice called ‘stand-up’, which is a time for us to share our updates: what we’d accomplished the day before, what we plan to do today, and what challenges we may potentially face. This quote is a reflection of that: while highlighting what we managed to achieve or complete the day before is something to silently applaud, I know I also have to look forward to succeeding in today’s tasks or challenges, and keep the momentum going from there.
– Kenneth T, Brand Designer
“Stay hungry, stay foolish.” - Steve Jobs, co-founder/CEO of Apple Inc. (1955-2011)
Behind this quote is a strong message that reminds me to keep challenging the norm and to never stop learning. As a passionate UI/UX designer, I live by this quote as a continuous motivation to keep bringing my best in whatever I do, no matter how many times I’ve failed – because the first step to being successful is to get back up after a fall. #getinspired #reachforthestars
– Muhammad, UI/UX Designer
“…The minute you realize that your options are unlimited, things just start falling into place all around you.” – John Cusack, American actor
For someone whose heart pounds uncontrollably at the thought of the unknown, I sure say ‘yes’ rather readily to opportunities that come my way! Some may not have worked for me in the end, but there was always something to learn from the experience. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and no experience is ever a wasted one. The timing has to be right, of course, but if we’re open to the possibilities, then things really do fall in place… akin to how I ended up joining akïn!
– Michelle, Jedi Wordsmith
Truly, that’s the profound effect of words: in a positive light, they give life - they have the power to give strength and build people up, but they have just as much power to beat people down. Lesser-known poet Pearl Strachan Hurd sums it up the best when she wrote, “Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs.”
